Mount Sturgeon, Grampians, Victoria
The last of the Great Dividing Range. Has little to commend itself over its higher northern neighbour, Mount Abrupt, apart from great views of the latter.
*Remember to take plenty of water and to tell someone of your plans!*
Ascent: ~1200 feet
Time: 2 hours, 7 km
Map: Well marked track - "Walking in the Southern Grampians" guide available from Parks Victoria (office Halls Gap)
The day I climbed Mount Sturgeon it was around 36 degrees. The track ascends the northern side of the hill, so you have the sun on your back the whole way, and in your face on the way down.
Starting from the car park at the T junction of the Halls Gap to Dunkeld and Victoria Valley roads, you start by contouring round to the west to then start heading south and uphill after a couple of kilometres. The track is clear but not very inspiring.
Views form the top are excellent, especially to Mount Abrupt to the North. The clear cuesta, "crest" geological landform of the Grampians is clear from this perspective.
